Vanity and Me...

My next project for school is going to be a "Vanity" book.

I have a portable vanity that I've been hauling around with me for many years. It's flat, made of crocodile skin, about 4"x6", has a handle, has a clasp and it opens flat like a book. It has a small holder for something flat, and it also has a speckled and broken mirror inside it.

For "Vanity" I'm going to get a new mirror and I'm going to write "Vanity" on it in red, lipstick-like paint. It will be glued inside what is going to become the front cover of the book. The small holder will hold a zine-like booklet which consists of a parable of a young woman named Vanity who owns this portable vanity. There will be some quotes about vanity, and some comments.

After the zine-like booklet is going to be the back cover, in which is going to be glued the speckled and broken mirror, on which is going to be written in the same lipstick-like paint that is on the first mirror, "...is a broken mirror..."

...we're pretty good company...

Yesterday I sent my first bookcrossings book off into the wild blue yonder on the 17 bus coming down from campus, down beside the first single seat. That said, it wasn't a great bus ride being as I had to listen to two different mother and son pairs having rather loud differences of opinion. One young adult male with apparently schizoid mother "I'm not going to come back there to be with you and fall down..." "I didn't ask you too." "GIve that to me, I'll call her." "You little *&^($F%#, you didn't program the number in here." The other pair was a ten-or-so year old boy with his non-stop nagging mother: "Sonny, sit down." "Sonny, stay there." "Sonny, don't look at that man, look out the window." "Sonny what are you looking at out there? Stop looking out the window and look ahead." "Sonny, don't be rude to people."

Nice.

What I don't understand is how these people manage to not be really horrible to one another. I"m thinking of that great scene at the end of "The Glass Menagerie" in which Tom confronts his mother then leaves ("...I don't care about your seventeen gentlemen callers...you ugly babbling old witch..."). How would I be if someone were nagging at me all the time? I would snap and be cranky.

Anyway, my copy of "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen was left on the #17 bus late yesterday afternoon. I hope that it is found by someone who understands the concept of bookcrossings, someone who reads it (or not) then passes it along.

Now I'm thinking of releasing another book. Maybe some non-fiction. Hey this might be a great way to rid myself of some of the self-help books I've accumulated. An invitation to a purge.
